The Bloomsbury Study Group B1 Preliminary for Schools Academy

What is B1 Preliminary for Schools?

B1 Preliminary for Schools (PET) is an internationally recognised Cambridge English qualification at CEFR Level B1.

It is designed for students who have already developed a basic foundation in English and are ready to move towards independent, more confident communication.

At Bloomsbury Study Group, this stage represents a key transition point — from basic language use to academic readiness.

Why is it important?

B1 is often where students begin to:

  • Express ideas more clearly and independently
  • Understand longer and more complex texts
  • Write with structure and purpose
  • Communicate with greater confidence

It provides the essential preparation for:

  • IGCSE English as a Second Language
  • IB English B
  • IELTS Academic

Without a strong B1 level, students often struggle to access academic content effectively.

What will students learn?

Students develop the ability to:

  • Understand longer texts and main ideas
  • Follow conversations and discussions
  • Write structured emails, articles and short essays
  • Express opinions and give reasons
  • Speak more fluently and confidently

This stage moves students beyond simple communication towards real independence in English.

Our Approach (The Bloomsbury Difference)

At this level, our focus shifts towards academic communication and independence.

We prioritise:

  • Clear structure in speaking and writing
  • Development of ideas and opinions
  • Accuracy alongside fluency
  • Language that transfers directly into school subjects

We ensure students are not just improving, but learning how to think and communicate in English.

How we ensure progress

  • Structured lessons targeting B1 competencies
  • Guided writing with clear feedback
  • Speaking development through discussion and interaction
  • Regular correction to build accuracy and confidence

Students are supported to move from short responses to clear, structured communication

Outcomes

Students will:

  • Communicate confidently at B1 level
  • Write with structure and clarity
  • Understand more complex English in academic contexts
  • Be fully prepared for IGCSE, IB and IELTS
